My Q9

I was confused.

Yes. It's true.

Now in my hands was this beautiful lime green (yes, beautiful...it grows on you) Motorola Q9 with Windows Mobile 6 on it that I had be anxiously anticipating for months. I'll just play with it and everything will be clear....right. So...I'll make a call. What .....where are the numbers. Oh.. when I touch them a letter shows....what's with that. Oh... there's a shift key...now it works.... wait...is that really the easiest way to do it?

And so it went for about a month and then I decided to document my learning:
#1 - to help me truly understand the Q and
#2 - maybe to help out someone else.

So, here it is... a question and answer blog, I hope written in PLAIN English!

Contacts - What's with the Contacts?

So... I want to pull up the name of a contact....

I've made a habit of always starting at the Home page (remember you touch the place with the little house) so that's what I do. Home - then Start and then find the icon with the person on it and down or over to that and there are my contacts but WAIT - it's last name/first name instead of the other way around.... ooohh... that is a switch I'll have to get used to.. So the menu has some things that you can do but I want to make a call and, let's say, I can't remember the contact's last name. Now what?

Well...I want to call Heidi and her last name is escaping me. I simply touch the H key and now every contact that has an H in it comes up....way too many. So I do the E key now and every contact that has HE in their name appears...ah ha... now we're down to a manageable number and, well what do you know... there is Heidi's name. So scroll down to it, hit enter and now you have her information and you can hit enter again to call her. Slick, huh?!

And now.... here's something even better... what I just outlined in the paragraph above, you can do from your home screen... even slicker!!

How do I add Gmail?

So... I tried a lot of things and then thought why not ask Google and here it is! I take issue with them calling it a "quick answer" but then what is "quick" to some people may not be "quick" to others. :):) Regardless, it works and now I get a sound (another question) when I get a new email... Cool, huh? The link takes you to the instructions but I've also pasted them below.

Windows Mobile 6 - The Quick Answer from Google

* Follow the instructions below to set up IMAP access in Windows Mobile 6.
* GGoogle Apps users, please follow the default instructions unless otherwise noted, replacing 'your_domain.com' with your actual domain name.

To configure IMAP for your Windows Mobile 6 device, just follow these steps:

1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings.
2. Open the Start menu and select Programs > Messaging > New E-mail Account.
3. Enter your Gmail address (including '@gmail.com') in the E-mail Address field*. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com'*.
* Windows Mobile 6.1 users: Enter an unintelligible email address (such as 'g@g') at this step. This will bypass the automatic configuration for POP access.
4. Uncheck the box that asks to get settings automatically from the Internet and select Next.
5. Select Internet e-mail as your email provider in the drop-down menu.
6. Enter your name as you want it to appear in sent emails.

SO....there you have it...the QUICK answer!!

How do I make a call?

Well, there are various ways.

Your provider should have transferred your contacts to your new Q from your old phone and the easiest way I've found is to press the key of the first or last name of your contact. Let's say you want to call "Mike". Press M and any contact with M in the first or last name will be listed with M highlighted. Too many...so.... now press I (you have MI now) which narrows it further to any name with Mi (Mike, Minna, Michelle, Miller). If you still want to narrow it down because you don't see it, add K (you now have Mik) and that, most likely, should do it. If you have numerous "Mikes" or several numbers for the Mike you're looking for, scroll down until you find the one you want.

Uh, Oh... scroll.... a new word... here's how: Dead center on your phone is a rectangular thing (my word). It has 4 arrows - look very closely and you'll see them. Yep, you guessed it.. scroll up, scroll, down and when you need to scroll right and scroll left.

So...the name you want to call is highlighted because you scrolled to it and now all you do is press the key on the far left in the middle that has the green circle on it and, like magic, you're making a call.

Oops, you want to stop quick, the dog is barking... press the key directly opposite the one with the green circle that you just pressed that has the red circle.

So....I know I said there are other ways. Yep.. another way is to press the home key (the one that is to the lower right of the one with the green circle) with the little house on it and you will see on your screen the word contacts. Press the dot below it and you'll see a list and then simply scroll down to find the person you want to call and follow the steps above.

Where's the key to make it a speakerphone?

Now....look at the bottom row of keys, there are only 5. The one on the far right turns the speakerphone function on and off. It's got a cute little symbol on it that reminds me of someone with a loudspeaker.

See the wheel on the side next to the screen.... hold it in and scroll up or down. If you don't hold it in first, it won't work for you.

How do you turn this darn thing on and off?

Look under the screen, above the keyboard on the right.....there...a red circle... press it to turn it on and off. You may have to hold it a second but that's the key. It also ends a conversation.

There now... that wasn't so hard...
